Our educational system in the United States is at a crossroads. The way that most instruction is provided: auditory lectures, fill-in-the blank worksheets, and memorization of facts, is not an intuitive modality of learning for most students. This is because research has demonstrated that 95% or more of children think using a visual language system: by making pictures, movies, or graphics in their minds (Arwood, 2011). Despite their best intentions, most teachers attempt to make children ‘fit the mold’ of education, even when these efforts do not play into students’ intuitive strengths for learning. It is time for all educators to become more familiar with how the human brain operates in order to meet every child’s needs. Neuro-Education provides one path forward for how to make schools a stress-free place of authentic learning for all.
What We Do
Dr. Christopher Merideth, a university instructor and former special education teacher, founded Neuro-Education Press to showcase the principle that all children can learn when the input they are provided matches the way that their brains work best. At its heart, the organization serves to publish books and educational materials deriving from theories originated by Dr. Ellyn Arwood, the creator of Arwood’s Neuro-Education Model and the Neuro-Semantic Language Learning Theory. Then, using this body of work as inspiration, a concerted effort is made to expand the scope of existing academic discourse by including diversified perspectives on scientific findings related to the study of the mind, the brain, and language. In this sense, the work of Neuro-Education Press holds one foot in the past to honor history and the other foot in the future to blaze new trails.
Mission
Writing and publishing a book as a first-time author is often a formidable endeavor. In addition, the world of academic scholarship may come across to many emerging scholars as insular and overlooking of new and divergent voices. In response to these dynamics, the mission of Neuro-Education Press is to provide a platform for diverse and inclusive voices to expand the current academic discourse related to brain-based learning.
In addition to publishing new texts from both emerging and established authors, Neuro-Education Press taps into an existing community of educators, parents, and scholars to provide a variety of outreach services in the form of consultations, workshops, and educational seminars. In this way, the organization helps fill the ongoing need for members of this community to meaningfully connect with others who are learning this content and attempting to shift their own existing worldviews. Calling upon both local and national personnel connections cultivated over the course of more than ten years in the field, founder Christopher Merideth contracts with a large network of colleagues who are ready to share their own unique stories and lend their own expertise to the cause.
Promoting Social Justice
When a unique and divergent idea such as Neuro-Education resonates with so many people, its reach soon becomes too vast to be contained within books alone. For this reason, Dr. Merideth has also levered his background in community building to grow Neuro-Education Press into a meeting place for educators, parents, and scholars alike. In the spirit of ongoing collaboration, Neuro-Education Press partners with multiple entities to form a consortium of stakeholders who value furthering the causes of social justice and the expansion of educational equity across the nation. Members of this learning community come together to meaningfully connect with others who are new to this content and support one another on their unique learning journeys.
